This is all related to visual cover navigation, which is a smart navigation technique that has been developed since 2005 by uniCHIO and the CSS WG.

The basic idea of visual cover navigation is:

User focusses on a link in a navigational menu, eg, a link and then scrolls with the pointer with no regard for the non-visible part of the page (when you scroll the page/page section, the non-visible page or section can move so that it becomes visible or covered by the visible content of the screen; this is the “cover navigation”)

A lot of support mechanisms are used to recognise this focus; one of these is a JavaScript function call with position detection that indicates where the user is clicking or where they stopped to click. This function is called “cover detection”.

You might remember that we talked about predicting focus events back in ouron how to make predictions. We described a scenario where a user focuses on a link in a navigation menu, scrolls with the mouse using the content area and focuses on a second link in the menu when he is a third of the way down the page; here, a cover detection event is detected for the second link, but in the example we described this was actually not correct, because the focus event for this second link was also detected (because the mouse was in the section) and the detection was done on the basis of position. This is obviously a very inaccurate practice.

This article focuses on the first part of the visual cover navigation technique, the cover detection. It explains how to implement it with JavaScript and all the pitfalls and issues you might face when you do this.
